Tracey Huguley

Tracey Huguley M.A. is a Master level American Sign Language Interpreter with over twenty-five years of experience, a CODA (child of Deaf adults), and a presenter/educator. She has been involved with SelfDesign since 2009 when she began a journey of guiding her three children’s learning using the SelfDesign methodology, which led her to pursue a MA in SelfDesign.

In her MA she researched the deeper questions around “how do humans learn”? Her passion is igniting the spark of curiosity inherent in each learner she works with. Tracey leads workshops on various topics that are interactive, engaging, and rooted in the love of learning that she believes that every human has within.

Thesis: A Heroine’s Journey as a Path of Inquiry

Introduction

We write to expose the unexposed. If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must. Otherwise, you’ll just be rearranging the furniture in rooms you have already been in. Most human beings are dedicated to keeping that one door shut. But the writer’s job is to see what’s behind it, to see the bleak unspeakable stuff, and to turn the unspeakable into words—not just any words but if we can, rhythm and blues (Lamott, 1995, p. 198).”

I started this journey as a quest to explore the following thesis questions: What are the stories of my life and how can I use these stories to develop those aspects of my life I want to cultivate? Also, what are my lived experiences of living in the Deaf community and how will a deep processing of these experiences help me address my issues of concern? Along the way not only did my questions change, the quest seemed to take on a life of it’s own. It became much more about healing. In addition, the new questions that began to arise were: What are my lived experiences of being the hearing adult child of Deaf adults? How might this type of quest bring healing and wholeness to myself? What stories might I find by taking this type of journey? The heroine’s journey as developed by Maureen Murdock makes sense to me as a path of inquiry due to the fact that I am someone who easily accesses my inner-world. Although, this has not always been true for me, it is something that I have become comfortable with in my life. Also, I love art. I wanted to enjoy this process and so I set out to make this fun! Using art as tools to unfold the interior of my inner-world was fun.

This journey was not easy by any definition. In fact, it was quite scary and uncomfortable at times. However, I knew I needed to take this quest and so I did. Along the way, I learned more about who I am, the wounds I have within, the parts of myself I have banished, how to bring healing and wholeness to these parts, and I exercised tremendous courage. This quest gave me an opportunity to access my stories of being the hearing child of Deaf adults. I am very excited to share the videos I created from the stories I wrote. The quest itself is also a story. It is the story of a heroine (me) and my journey toward healing, wholeness, and an integration of the many parts of myself. I hope you enjoy this quest as much I have enjoyed it. As you read along and watch the videos use this process to reflect into your inner-world. See what stories you might find.
